Where's "mom"?
Well you see, that's just the thing. I knew I'd be a mom one day, but I don't recall ever being that girl that said, "I want to be a stay at home mom, when I grow up." I wanted to be identified as many things, but that wasn't one of them.
Four months after we married, I wanted children. Oh man I'm glad Andrew was scared because five months after we were married, I realized I wasn't ready. Whew - close call.
But then a couple years passed and Andrew was ready.... I still wasn't. 8 months later I realized, in the shower, that I was ready; I was ready to be a mother.
At this point in my life I had decided many of my desires would not become a reality. "Teacher" fell into my lap due to the current state of our life and the opportunities placed before us. At the time, I was ok with that - more than OK, actually. I felt I would teach for now, and then one day go back to school for my MFT license. In fact, that's still the plan.
But there I was, in the shower, where you think and sing best, and I knew it was time. One week later, I found out I was pregnant. We were thrilled - I was thrilled. I knew I could do BOTH.
And I did, for years.... until I started becoming uneasy. Driving to work one day I knew stronger than ever that it was my time to be a "full-time mom". It was time to shift my identity and I wasn't ready. It was as clear as the day in the shower, but I was not as ready.
Still, I did it - I resigned, I would not longer fill in the box "occupation" on any form. Weird.
Why am I reviewing these life choices, yet again...
Well because sometimes being a "mom", is HARD. I mean the hardest day EVER - harder than any other day in school or in the working field. Hard to believe, but oh so very true. With Andrew gone so much lately, I'm having more hard days. You see, when "working at home", you are still facing the trials and struggles of your personal life. When you go to work, it's a bit of an escape from your "life trials". Makes sense in my head, anyway.
And so, here I was, Wednesday night, on the verge of packing up my bags and running away. OK, not really but I imagined it so. Even good 'ol Harry Potter couldn't put my mind to rest.
I begrudgingly came out here to watch some
Bible Videos. They were good, but I needed something else. An hour and a half later, I realized that the Mormon Messages were just what I needed!
"Are you in there - Mother Father, are you there?"
Oh man... no, not always. I try - I really do try, but sometimes I check out. It's true - I'm guilty.
Some days I want to go back to work. I know I was a good teacher. I reached those kids and I know it. As a mother, you don't always KNOW you're doing a good job. You're reassured less frequently as a mother in comparison to that in which you gain in the work field.
So yes, Wednesday I was rather selfish. I wanted to fast forward time. I wanted to get back MY life.
But the fact is, this IS my life and it IS the life I want. I was just tired. I was just exhausted. I look into the faces of these kids and I realize time will pass all too quickly. Today I was rather excited that they are growing and could clean out the car, start the laundry, and organize the living room. This indeed will help to save my sanity. But in time, they will want to hang out with friends all weekend, go out on dates, leave for college, serve a mission... in time, they will leave me. Hopefully only in body and not in spirit, but at that time, I will look back on these crazy days, the days I want to pull out my hair and run away, and I will miss them. This I KNOW. I KNOW this to be true and in knowing this, I am grateful for these out of control days, house, kids, schedules, life. I do want to be a mom but I just pray I can be better at it so I won't get so discouraged. Luckily, I am blessed to know many amazing mothers and I have the opportunity to take what I learn from them, and implement their skills into our lives according to the ways in which my children and I need them.
Truth be told - I'd be devastated if I was ever fired from my "mom" job!

| after looking at this picture, some may think I should be fired... but here's the deal.... Ry wouldn't stop complaining and I told him if he kept it up, I'd tape his mouth shut. Well, he complained and although I did not hear it, Jackson did. I was going to give Ry another chance until I heard it, but he said he wanted the tape. Odd boy - but a much more peaceful one with tape over his mouth. The living room is now clean and Ry never complained again. |
